Orchid in standard potting soil. All orchids—especially epiphytic species—need a lot of air around their roots. The best medium is one that is very light, porous, and fast-draining.

Orchids should be watered thoroughly when the growing medium is nearly dry but not completely dry. Overwatering can lead to root rot, while underwatering can cause dehydration.

Orchids are often grown in specialized orchid mixtures that provide excellent drainage and aeration. Common components of orchid potting mixes include bark, sphagnum moss, perlite, and charcoal. Repotting should be done when the orchid outgrows its current container or when the potting medium starts to break down.

Fill one 3- to 4-inch pot per orchid plantlet with fir bark potting mix to within an inch of the top the container. Once the orchid stem segments sprouted small plantlets from the buds, place each container, covering the remaining stem and roots with potting mix.
